A Smart Solution for Cash Transactions
With the U.S. Mint set to cease penny production in 2026, retailers face growing challenges in managing cash transactions. As part of our ongoing commitment to retailer flexibility and regulatory readiness, ECRS is introducing a new advanced setting in CATAPULT Transaction Server to address the evolving landscape of penny usage in cash transactions. CATAPULT’s penny-rounding feature offers a currency-agnostic solution that automatically rounds Change Due to the nearest $0.05, or the ability to adjust to always round up or always round down. This new functionality comes in addition to the Threshold rounding solution presently offered by ECRS. This new setting will be available in both CATAPULT 5.7.158 and 5.8.167 and will be released during the week of November 10, 2025.
Retailers can apply these settings at the store level for localized control or at the enterprise level for global consistency. The adjustment appears as a discount line item—even when the total increases—ensuring accurate reporting and transparency. This logic ensures consistency, simplifies operations, and aligns with practices already adopted in countries like Canada.
Seamless Integration, Customer-Friendly Design
CATAPULT’s Unified Transaction Logic® ensures that the point-of-sale, self-checkout and even web orders that are paid for during pickup seamlessly provide the needed rounding. Retailers can also customize receipts and kiosk screens to inform customers about rounding, minimizing confusion and enhancing the shopping experience.
